CoQ10: What are the Heart Health Benefits?

The coenzyme Q10, more commonly referred to as CoQ10, is a cofactor found in cellular energy production. It has been shown that coQ10 deficiency can lead to various health concerns including cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension, and congestive heart failure.
 
In addition to its primary function as an electron transporter during cellular respiration, there is evidence that coQ10 may have "significant cardiovascular protective effects" that could help prevent CVD, the world's leading cause of death.
 
The first study was done on 10 male patients between the ages of 40-60 who were showing symptoms of increased blood pressure and increased blood lipid levels along with being at risk for coronary artery disease from coQ10 levels of less than 0.5 ng/mL CoQ10 levels were measured and then compared with their coQ10 supplement intake. They found that coenzyme Q10 supplementation reduced blood pressure significantly in the study subjects who had borderline hypertension, but coenzyme Q10 also appeared to have a mild hypertensive effect on those with normal blood pressure.
 
The results of this study suggest that coQ10 is necessary for cardiovascular health as it acts as both an antioxidant and an essential cofactor. The same group of researchers later studied coenzyme q10's effects on congestive heart failure over an average period of 27 months. During this time, there was no death among the patients taking coQ10 supplements while four deaths occurred among the control group receiving a placebo supplement.
 
This study shows coQ10's cardioprotective effect on congestive heart failure patients, even in the absence of coenzyme Q10 deficiency.
Since coQ10 is an antioxidant and has been shown to reduce blood pressure, coenzyme q10 supplementation may be an advantageous alternative to common antihypertensive drugs that are associated with many adverse cardiovascular side effects. However, previous studies have demonstrated it can cause serious adverse effects including rhabdomyolysis (i.e., the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue). The coenzyme q10 dosage for humans is between 30-300 milligrams per day; however, many supplements contain only 10 milligrams per serving. Coenzyme q10 has been shown to reduce blood pressure and coenzyme q10 deficiency appears to be a common cofactor of CVD, so coenzyme q10 supplementation may be an advantageous alternative to commonly prescribed antihypertensive drugs.
